Although Puerto Rico is significantly less exposed to the cyclones of the Caribbean – especially in comparison to Jamaica, Cuba, and the Lesser Antilles – hurricanes frequently invade the archipelago between August and October. Another contributing factor to variations in temperature and rainfall typical of weather in Puerto Rico is the mountainous region of the Cordillera Central. Due to their sheltering effect these mountains are also responsible for changes in local wind speed and direction.
